Abstract
During early infancy, brain processes occur that are fundamental for development in the following stages, the sequence of events that characterize it may be affected by risk factors for brain damage of both biological and environmental origin. This study aimed to establish the predictive value of the accumulation of perinatal risk factors and the psychological well-being of primary caregivers on the development of communication, problem-solving, motor, and social skills in a sample of 64 dyads of caregivers and infants from rural areas. Results of multiple regression analyses showed that communication, problem-solving, and social skills development can be predicted by caregivers' psychological well-being, while motor development was not explained by any of the variables. The findings are consistent with studies that have pointed to the relevance of caregivers' mental health to early development.
