Abstract
Multiple factors influence people with HIV not to take their medications as prescribed by health personnel. The present exploratory study aimed to analyze the perception of social support received from the family in people with HIV and its relationship with therapeutic adherence and disease progression. Information was collected from 24 participants over 18 years of age selected through convenience sampling in a public health center in Sonora, Mexico. Scales to measure Psychological Variables and Treatment Adherence Behaviors in People with HIV, Duke-UNC-11 Social Functional Support Questionnaire and SALVAR database analysis for Viral Load and CD4 count were applied. Participants who perceived better social support (73 %) reported greater adherence to ART and less disease progression (p = 0.007). However, despite most participants rating their support networks positively, treatment adherence was lower than expected. Participants from traditional families showed more significant variability in their historical Viral Load and CD4 Count values, suggesting a trend toward disease progression and inadequate adherence to treatment. It is necessary to replicate this study with a larger sample to ensure the representativeness of the population in demographic and clinical variables.
