Abstract

The aim of the present study was to analyze the association between Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), psychological distress, and interactive optimism levels on Mexican adults. The sample included 917 adults who answered various instruments. Severe anxiety was significantly associated with abuse, presence of chronic mental illness of a family member, family violence, parental separation, emotional and physical neglect. Major depression was significantly associated with abuse, chronic mental illness of a family member, family violence, emotional and physical neglect, parental separation, and collective violence and number of ACEs. Severe stress was significantly associated with abuse, chronic mental illness of a family member, physical neglect and community violence. The absence of experiences such as emotional neglect or parental separation was associated with higher levels of optimism. ACEs are associated with psychological distress in adulthood; therefore, it is necessary to develop and apply programs for detection and prevention of ACEs.
