Abstract
Adverse childhood experiences, such as abuse, neglect, and family dysfunction, have been associated with difficulties in cognitive and emotional development. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a stress management intervention in high school adolescents aged between 15 and 17 years. The results showed that 62% of the participants had at least one type of childhood adversity. A relationship was found between having experienced some adversity in childhood and high levels of stress, as well as a difference between the group that received the intervention and the group that served as a reference. This difference was determined as a large effect size (t = 3.94, df = 47, p < 0.01, d = 0.80). It is concluded that the intervention was effective in reducing stress scores and that it can serve as a reference for the design and implementation of programs that remedy the impact of childhood adversities.
