Abstract
Lesbian, gay, and bisexual people are characterized by going through more situations of exclusion and negative effects on psychological health in contrast to heterosexuals. The objective of the study was to compare the levels of perception of social exclusion, anxiety and depression between a group of lesbians, gays and bisexuals and another group of heterosexuals. The responses of a non-probabilistic convenience sample of 190 people from northwestern Mexico aged 18 to 42 years (M = 22.84, SD = 4.11) were analyzed, who responded to the social exclusion perception instrument of Téllez and Rivera, and Beck’s anxiety and depression inventories. The results showed that the lesbian, gay and bisexual group indicated higher levels of moderate to extreme/severe perception of social exclusion, anxiety and depression in contrast to the heterosexual sample. It is argued that the physical, mental and social affectations occur more in people who publicly share their diverse sexual orientations in a system with a higher rate of heterosexual individuals.
